Math 090- Course Information
Course Description:
This
is a basic arithmetic and beginning algebra course designed to facilitate the
preparation of students for College Mathematics. It begins with a review of basic Mathematical topics, and then
introduces the fundamental topic of Variables.
It goes on to examine the use of variables in linear algebraic
expressions. Students will consider
Linear Equations and Inequalities, Whole Number Exponents, and basic factoring
techniques. Critical thinking skills
will be developed through numerous applications of these concepts to real- world
problems.
A final grade of A, B, or C, is needed to pass this
course. A final grade of D or F will
indicate course failure. Failing any developmental course will result in
dismissal from school. You may not
withdraw from a developmental course.
Students that successfully complete this course will move into Math 100,
Intermediate Algebra.
It is
the responsibility of each student to use his personalized Blackboard
Account. I will be communicating with
you through Blackboard. I will send
personal emails to you, and post your test scores.
Materials:
Students will be required
to have the following material: A Graph
Paper Spiral Notebook
A Ruler (at least 6 inches)
A Scientific Calculator
Attendance
is critical in this course. Algebra is
taught in sequence. When a topic is
missed because of absence, the student is left with the responsibility of
filling the gap. For most students, the
material is more easily learned in the classroom. As an additional incentive, points are awarded at the end of the
semester for good attendance.
Textbook:
The
text for this course is Introductory Algebra, by Aufman, Barker, &
Lockwood (Houghton Mifflin). This book
offers the following support for students:
1. Smarthinking , (An Online Help Program.)
Students can ask questions online and receive answers in real time. An
I.D. Number comes with the text.
2. A Practice CD.
Additional practice work is provided for each chapter.
