STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

DeVry University is a technically oriented institution of higher education with a specialized mission to prepare students for meaningful careers in technology and business. At the heart of DeVry's educational philosophy is a firm belief that education should be relevant to students' lives, to their chosen careers and to a changing world.

To this end, DeVry involves representatives from industry and business, its own faculty and other academic consultants in the development of curricula that respond to a diverse student population and a dynamic employment marketplace. Applications-oriented learning is emphasized across all curricula to forge a strong link between theory and practice.  Rigorous, sharply defined technical sequences are infused with a broad- based program of general education to provide the coherence, depth and practicality that distinguish a DeVry education.

DeVry seeks to graduate students who can contribute immediately to their professions and advance steadily in their careers. For this reason, all programs of study provide extensive practice with real-world problem- solving techniques and encourage development of interpersonal and communication skills.

As a member of the higher-education community, DeVry acknowledges its responsibility to extend and disseminate knowledge by working in partnership with other educational institutions and by promoting educational opportunity through active participation in civic affairs.

Above all, DeVry is a teaching institution at which the educational and personal development of each student is a central priority. The university strives to address the special needs of its multicultural, largely commuter-based student population by means of numerous support services, convenient access to learning resources and a personalized approach toward instruction. This nurturing environment facilitates student achievement, the realization of career goals and the capacity for lifelong learning.

OPERATIONAL GOALS

To ensure the operational success of its mission, DeVry has established the following goals:

To maintain admissions policies and procedures that provide educational access to a wide spectrum of the population, especially to minorities and other groups traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

To recruit qualified faculty who combine appropriate academic credentials and practical experience with a deep commitment to the academic success of students, and to provide an ongoing program of faculty development to ensure their continued instructional effectiveness.

To revise and update curricular offerings on an ongoing basis so that they reflect the current state of technology and the needs of employers.

To furnish the physical facilities and educational resources essential to creating a comfortable and stimulating learning environment.

To offer student support services, including personal and academic advising, housing assistance, part-time employment placement and extracurricular activities, that contribute to a high quality of campus life.

To administer a comprehensive program of financial assistance that conforms to high ethical standards and  encourages students to be responsible consumers of financial aid.

To provide an active career advising and graduate employment program that prepares graduates for timely and successful entry into the employment marketplace.

MISSION OF DEVRY

The mission of DeVry University is to foster student learning through high-quality, career-oriented undergraduate and graduate programs in technology, business and management.  The University delivers its programs at campuses, centers and online to meet the needs of a diverse and geographically dispersed student population.

Building on the foundations established by DeVry Institutes and Keller Graduate School of Management, DeVry University seeks to consistently achieve the following purposes.

PHILOSOPHY OF GENERAL EDUCATION

General education is an integral part of the DeVry curriculum.  General Education builds the “soft skills” that are the intellectual foundation for present and future success.  These skills insure a lifelong ability to learn and to meet the challenges of our constantly changing technological workplace.  By successfully completing a coherent and well-designed sequence of General Education courses, the DeVry student will acquire the skills necessary to think critically and independently, to express ideas clearly, to acquire and evaluate information from a variety of sources and perspectives and to make decisions that respect the rights of others.

The General Education curriculum includes courses in the humanities, the natural sciences, communication and personal development.  These courses provide an intellectual context within which one gains a better understanding of the connections between our own lives, the society and culture in which we live and the technologies we create and use.  General Education complements and enhances the more specifically directed studies of business and technology and will enable the DeVry student to achieve the fullest possible learning experience. The General Education curriculum will provide or enhance the following qualities and qualifications:

Self Awareness: Students will be able to reflect on what they have learned and gain insight into their own motives, abilities and priorities.

Curiosity: Students will demonstrate a willingness to develop new professional, intellectual and civic interests.

Aesthetic Sense: Students will be able to bring an artistic dimension to their professional and personal lives.

Ethical Judgment: Students will be able to make informed decisions based on an appreciation of the rights of others and their own obligations to society.

Social Responsibility: Students will be better able to make contributions to their professions and their communities as willing and informed citizens as a result of their understanding of the interplay between the individual and society.

Respect for Diversity: Students will be able to objectively analyze the role of diverse opinions and perspectives in making personal and professional decisions.

Critical Thinking: Students will be able to bring a sense of intellectual history to bear on the evaluation of complex problems and will thereby be better able to confront and solve them.

Oral and Written Communication: Students will be able to convey facts and concepts to an intended audience.

Group and Interpersonal Effectiveness: Students will be able to recognize and evaluate patterns of human behavior and be better able to inform as leaders or members of a team.

Leadership:  Students will develop a sense of shared values and the ability to promote effective problem solving and will be looked to as team leaders.

Accessing Information: Students will acquire and apply a wide range of research skills and strategies that will enable them to locate, evaluate and use information that is available in both traditional and contemporary media.

Quantitative Reasoning: Students will be able to reason logically and solve problems using appropriate computational techniques.
